June 1st 2014- Battle of Camrock- Race Report by Brandon Andrews. WORS #3 race was amazing! We had a fantastic group out at the race. The following is my observations from the day. Hopefully I can get more updates from other racers about how great of a day it was. The started with us trying to find a place to set up our tent. We did get to squeeze our tent between two others just barley. Once we figured out the tent spot we could focus more on the racing part. Due to the size and parking of the course, the tent was set up away from the start and near a feed zone area. Communication due to lack of cell signals made it hard to let everyone know where that was until they were already racing. Muse and I (Brandon) were up first to race. This year I am racing as a Cat 3 rider in the 30-34 age group. Muse was in the 40-44 age group. The conditions of the trail were hot and dry. The start was up a long hill in the sun and put the pain in early. I was able to get a good position in about the 10th spot. Through one tree section a guy two bikes in front hit a tree and flipped over, he was ok and would later catch back up for part of the race before dropping off. It startled me a bit and reminded me to focus on my handling a bit more. My group did two laps, the 2nd lap consisted of me and two other guys right together. On the last climb I over took both of them with every amount of energy I had left. I ended up 5th in my age group and 16th overall of 191 in the field. Good race for me. Muse was rocking his single speed and was able to still keep up with his group. He came across the line in 8th for his age group and 41st of 191 overall. Bobby was next Racing Sport Cat 2, 24-29. Right before the race started a 5 min thundershower came across the course, changing everything. There was even a lightning strike about 100ft away from our tent. Bobby has been crushing it on the trails and this would be his first race in Wisconsin. He and another potential AMR Member, Ryan, were both excited about the race. Right after the start both Bobby and Ryan were in the lead group moving fast on the trails. I moved to the start of race to catch the two of them on the next lap. I then saw Bobby walking his bike. He had been in the lead group of 3 when he hit a small jump, due to the rain slick conditions for that first lap the front tire slid and burped on him causing him to crash. Fearing for his bike and its integrity (he thought he heard a crack) he pulled out of the race. Bobby was very disappointing, but we know he will be back at another race and will rock it. Ryan ended up winning his age group. Just as Bobbys race was starting and finishing, Ross & Arild were next. Ross racing the Women's Cat 2 group and Arild in the Sport Cat 2 55-59 age group. Ross finished her race 7th in her age group and 13th overall. This was her second race for the WORS series this year. Arild rocked the Mens Cat 2 race finishing 1st overall in age group and 41st overall in the Sport 2's. The last two Angry Monkeys to race for the day were Kathleen in the Women's Open cat and Laura in the Pro/Elite 1 group. Kathleen had a great start to the race even though she was wearing low socks. She pulled of the front of the group from the start and was able to maintain her gap through the entire two laps. She won the Women's Open group. Laura racing in the Pro/Elite group had a good start and continued to reach some goals on the course. She ended up 5th in her age group and 10th overall in the PRO/Elite Women's group after 3 hot and tough laps. Overall it was just a great day of racing and hanging out. Two 1st place podiums and some good fun. -Brandon. Hopefully more updates and photos to come! |
